Nick Woolsey

Nick’s influence on poi spinning and the flow arts is so incalculably huge it almost seems like a disservice to him to try and summarize it, but I’ll give it a chance anyhow.

Nick was a pioneer of flowers--introducing the techniques of inspin and antispin flowers to an entire generation of poi spinners and revolutionizing the art. His video “Dervishly Yers” embedded his techniques so deeply into poi culture that many people who learn those techniques now have no idea there was a time when they weren’t commonplace.

In addition, he revolutionized flow arts education by pioneering YouTube as a platform for spreading poi instruction to the entire world. You might be hard pressed to find a poi spinner who has picked up the art in the last 15 years that didn’t learn at least one trick from Nick’s videos. His informative and amiable approach to video instruction had a huge influence on me and had a major impact on how I approached creating my own instructional videos.

Nick Woolsey has been an influential poi artist since 2002. He has toured all over the world teaching poi to thousands of people in person, and to tens of thousands more through video. He has put all that experience into this online course.

Nick compares learning poi to learning music. Mastering the fundamental skills allows a poi artist to play freely, to learn new moves easily, and to develop personal style.

When not teaching poi or practicing, Nick creates wildflower gardens, attempts dating, and designs imaginary spaceships.

The imaginary spaceships tend to work out the best.
